About the HFCWRT

The Harpers Ferry Civil War Round Table is an informal organization, dedicated to providing a place for enthusiasts of Civil War history to broaden their knowledge and interact with like-minded people of a common interest. Since 1979, it has been our mission to share a diverse understanding and promote preservation and education in the American Civil War.

Our round table is located in historic Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, at the center of the Civil War. In 1859 our town was the site of abolitionist John Brown’s raid on the U.S. Arsenal, a major catalyst of the Civil War. Located at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, and the borders of three states, Harpers Ferry was a major strategic location throughout the war. Residents here experienced constant military occupation and martial law by both sides and endured a major battle and innumerable fights and skirmishes over four years. Located in the heart of Mosby Country and an hour’s drive from half-dozen other major battlefields, what better place could there be for a Civil War round table?

Everyone with an interest in learning about the Civil War is always welcome to join us at the Harpers Ferry Civil War Round Table, regardless of their background or prior knowledge. Our organization has a friendly, welcoming atmosphere based in kindness and mutual respect. We are non-partisan, meaning that we do not exclusively endorse either Union or Confederate viewpoints and present topics that highlight both sides of the war.

The HFCWRT meets monthly to explore diverse aspects of the Civil War and its legacy, from the battlefield to the homefront and beyond. Each month a different historian, author, or other expert in an area of Civil War history joins us to share their own knowledge and insights. Prior to each meeting, the HFCWRT sits down to dinner provided by our hosts, the ladies of the Camp Hill - Wesley United Methodist Church. The food is always delicious and plentiful and the family style dinner gives everyone the opportunity to relax, socialize, and meet fellow enthusiasts of history. As with our meetings, anyone and everyone is welcome to join us for dinner each month.

We sincerely hope that you will join us at our next meeting of the Harpers Ferry Civil War Round Table. We believe that everyone brings something to the table and that all of us benefit when we come together to share our passion for America’s defining conflict.

Annual Dues for membership in the Harpers Ferry Civil War Round Table are $30. Dues are payable at the first meeting of the season (September) or the next meeting in which a member is attendance.
